SCAD selects students to participate in collaborative classes with real world companies. These classes are called CLC. BMW gave us a prompt in autonomous driving.
This project was a sponsored studio by BMW that solved real-world client objectives.
How can an autonomous vehicle communicate with other participants so that everyone stays safe?

We had to do a lot of field work on this project. We videoed and documented hundreds of interactions with cars, bikes, pedestrians and other stakeholders from multiple cities. We had to coordinate and organize all the data points to come up with common patterns. Once it was done we were able to determine common patterns like how often stakeholders use hand gestures to communicates with others, and what motivates stakeholders to act in unexpected ways.
Before this project, I was unaware of how much communication was necessary to drive. I drive almost every day, but I hadn’t thought about how all the rules I learned at 16 were a whole different language, a language autonomous cars would have to learn. In the course of 10 weeks, we had to re-learn how to drive and explain movements from people, cars, bikes that we intuitively knew but had never explained. Some of these patterns vary from city to city as well as country. It was fascinating and a little disturbing to learning this way of communicating can quite literally mean the difference between life and death.
Research Methods Included:
Secondary Research - Read scientific journals, articles, and data basis.
Autonomous driving is a very popular topic and it worked in our favor when discovering the latest technology and trends.
Primary Research - Field Research, Surveys, and Expert Interviews
We establish key motivators and developed stakeholder maps.
I wrote the informative video that summed up all of our findings.
Edited and provide the copy for posters, presentations, and the process book.
Due to a non-disclosure agreement, I am not allowed to say any more about the project specifics online.
However, I can discuss the project further in interviews.
